Port of Melbourne has ongoing dredging obligations to ensure the safe passage of ships visiting the port.
Below is information on current and past dredging programs.
2021 Works – complete
Port of Melbourne has conducted a dredging program in the port area and Hobsons Bay. It commenced on 26 April 2021 and concluded on the 21st May 2021. The dredging program involved the targeting of selected areas of seabed in the port that are less than the maintained depth for shipping at that location. The material was “swept” into adjacent areas of deeper water using a steel bar suspended from the stern of the tug Edi ; very similar to a grader operation during road works.

2019-2020 Program (complete)
Dredging works were carried out over the 2019/2020 summer period at various locations within the port precinct and the South Channel in Port Phillip Bay to remove a build up of sediment and to ensure Port of Melbourne’s berths and channels are maintained for shipping.
Dredging activities have been conducted, on a routine basis, in the shipping channels throughout Port Phillip and the port area over the past 100 years.

Environment Approvals
Port of Melbourne’s dredging works have been approved by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP).
Port of Melbourne will be monitoring the noise levels of dredging works in areas close to residential communities.
